Two weeks after it hit stores, Apple already wants to know what iPhone Duo buyers think. The company is sending email surveys to some buyers of its first foldable. It asks about the crease, the outer display, and the under-display camera. Here’s what it asks, what it leaves out, and what you can do if you get one.
What Apple asks in the survey
The survey starts with motivation: why you bought the iPhone Duo now. Possible answers include wanting to try Apple’s first foldable, buying it on impulse, or expecting phone prices to go up.
Then it gets into the points that have been debated most since the first reviews:
- The size of the display when the phone is closed. The outer display measures 5.4 inches, practically the same as the now-discontinued iPhone mini.
- How visible the crease is on the inner display.
- Whether the under-display camera gets in the way when using the phone open.
- The image quality of that camera, which tops out at 4MP.
- A final open-ended question about what you would add to or change on the iPhone Duo.

What the survey doesn’t ask
What it leaves out is just as interesting as what it asks. The survey doesn’t ask about Touch ID (the Duo has no Face ID, one of the main criticisms in the reviews), or about the apps that still aren’t adapted to the foldable format. It also doesn’t ask about the display cracks near the hinge, the most serious problem the Duo has had so far.
Post-launch surveys are routine for Apple, so this doesn’t mean anything will change in the next model. What it does reveal is which trade-offs the company is paying attention to.
Why the crease and the camera
They’re the Duo’s two most visible compromises compared with a regular iPhone:
- The crease: Apple has never said it doesn’t exist. What it promises is that the inner display’s finish makes it less visible. Reviewers agreed that you can see it in certain lighting, though less than on other foldables.
- The inner camera: to avoid putting a hole in the 7.6-inch display, Apple placed the camera underneath it. The price is a 4MP resolution, far from the 12MP of the front camera on the outer display. It was one of the main complaints in the reviews.

If you have an iPhone Duo in the US
In the US, the iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 (256GB). For that kind of money, two things are worth keeping in mind:
- If you get the survey, the open-ended question is the one that counts. It’s the only place where you can tell Apple about what the survey doesn’t ask: the cracks, Touch ID, or the apps that aren’t adapted.
- Watch the return window. Apple gives you 14 days from delivery. If you got yours on launch day (October 23), that window is about to close or already has. After that, you’re covered by Apple’s one-year limited warranty, or AppleCare+ if you bought it.
My take
I think it’s a good sign that Apple is asking directly about the crease and the 4MP camera, because those are the two areas where the Duo falls behind any $2,000 iPhone. But it’s striking that it doesn’t ask about the cracks. That’s what worries people thinking about buying one most, and what has gotten the most attention since October 23. If you get the survey, use the last question to tell Apple.
Did you get the survey? What would you change about the iPhone Duo? Tell me in the comments or on social media.
